What is online blackjack?
Using standard playing cards, the aim of blackjack is to beat the dealer by getting a hand closest to the magic score of 21. Go over, and you are bust and lose.
Playing online blackjack brings the fun online, with advanced computer software with amazing animations, great sounds, and smooth gameplay, creating a realistic playing experience.
Live blackjack makes the player experience even more unique by streaming live action from a real casino or special studio.
As for the game itself, blackjack rules are simple. Place a bet and get two cards while the dealer is dealt one card face up. The aim is to beat the dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible. Face cards are worth 10, and aces are 1 or 11. All other cards are their face value.
Receive an ace and card worth 10, and that's called a 'natural' or blackjack, and you win. Blackjack is paid at odds of 3/2.
If you don't have a natural, you have the chance to 'hit' – take another card – or 'stand' – stay on your total.
You can keep taking as many cards as you want but go over 21, and you lose. The dealer wins in that case without having to reveal another card.
If you stick on a number under 21, for example, 18, the dealer then plays. They give themselves a second card, but unlike the player, the rules dictate they must stand on 17 and hit on 16 or under.
If both hands are not bust, the winner is the hand closest to 21. If the player wins the hand, they are paid at 1/1 (except blackjack). If the dealer wins, then the player loses their stake. Ties result in a push (stakes returned).
How to win at online blackjack
A good blackjack player can push the house edge down to around 0.5% with a bit of skill, making it one of the best casino games to play.
The player should know blackjack strategy (more below) and understand all the extra rules.
Aside from the basic rules above, splitting pairs is when you are dealt two cards of the same value, and you split them into two new hands. This means you also double your stake.
Doubling down is an option when your first two cards dealt are worth 9,10, or 11. You can choose to double your stake in exchange for one more card.
There is also insurance to consider. If the dealer's upcard is an ace, players can buy insurance against the dealer making blackjack. This is an additional bet which pays 2/1 should the dealer indeed get blackjack.
Understanding all the rules is vital when you play any casino game, so always make sure you are confident you know what you are doing before you play.
To help you win, look out for single deck blackjack - a firm favourite of blackjack fans as it's easier to keep track of what cards are left in the deck. Most online blackjack games use between six and eight decks of cards.
Be careful not to read anything into winning or losing runs. Just because you have won six hands in a row, for example, doesn't mean you are due a loss or after six losses, you are due a win. Each hand is new, and good or bad runs shouldn't lead you away from a staking plan.
Best strategies for online blackjack
Blackjack strategy depends on what the dealer's upcard is. This is valuable information and should be acted on as follows.
Dealer has a 'good' card – a 7,8,9,10, or 11. Keep drawing until you hit at least 17.
Dealer has a 'poor' card – a 4,5 or 6. Standing on 12 or over is the right move. Never take a card in this scenario if there is a chance of going bust.
Dealer has an 'average' card – a 2 or a 3. Aim to stand on 13 or higher.
If you are dealt an ace. Aim for at least a total of 18. An ace and a six, for example, is a fair hand at 17, but you should hit again.
When to double down. If you have a total of 11, always double down. Double down with a total of 10 unless the dealer has a 10-card or ace. Double down on a total of 9 only if the dealer's card is a 2-6.
